The IMP-30 is an economical, 30 Watt direct drive motor, comparable to the old "020" size ferrite sport motors.It is a perfect match for sport or scale free flight models weighing 6-10 oz. (170 - 284 g) with 150 - 250 sq in. of wing area.An important reason for its economy is that it only requires a low cost 2-cell NiCad battery for the smaller, lighter free flight models, and only 3 cells for larger free flight models. The IMP's very low price and outstanding performance have made multi-motor R/C sport flying popular.

The TROLL-35 is almost the same size and weight as the IMP-30, with slightly smaller winding wire. This plus the latest motor technology permits this motor to run on more cells. The TROLL-35 draws 8.2 Amps at 3 Volts, producing 2.9 oz. thrust at 9300 RPM on a 5-1/2"prop. It draws 11 Amps at 4 Volts, producing 4.1 oz. thrust at 10,800 RPM on the same prop. The TROLL-35 will fly free flight or small R/C models weighing 7 to 12 oz. with wing areas of 150 - 250 sq. in. We recommend 4- 5 cell battery packs. The TROLL-35 is used in our Blue Flame Blaster ducted fans.

Our largest wattage motor, the ELF-50, is an ideal power system for small R/C sport flying. It is direct drive and comparable to the former "035" ferrite motors. It has large diameter armature windings that develop maximum power on 4 cells. The ELF-50 will fly models weighing 18-32 oz., with wing areas of 200-300 sq. in. The ELF-50 motor is used in our Red Flame Blaster ducted fans.

The GNOME-50 Watt motor includes an integral gear train of 2.14:1. The housing is plastic and the gear train is 32 pitch steel with a #10-32 output shaft. This motor has smaller windings than the ELF-50 and is intended for those R/C flyers who prefer using a higher number of cells. It is recommended for use with 18-24 oz. models having 250-400 sq. in. wing area.
This motor can be mounted using clam-shell beam mounts or Sonic Tronic#160 mounts.
The GNOME-50 is ideal for off-center twins, pushers, and planes whose motors are mounted on pylons, like gliders and sea-planes. Due to the plastic gear housing, we recommend this motor for airplanes whose configuration assures that the gear-box is not the first thing that hits the dirt in the event of a mishap. The GNOME-50 draws 5.5 Amps at 7.3 Volts on a TopFlite 9"x 8" prop and 6 cells. It draws 6.8 Amps at 8.6 Volts on 7 cells with the same prop. The weight is 3.45 oz.

Blue Flame Blaster and Red Flame Blaster
For several years HiLine has been gathering data on aircraft for use with the Red and Blue Flame Blaster ducted fans. One of the best designs seen is the "Raven" (Flying Models, Oct.'93)and its sister ship, the "Robin", listed in our Plans List, for free flight and R/C flying. We recommend wing areas of 150-250 sq. in.,with weights of 8-13 oz. for free flight and 16-20 oz. for R/C. Therefore the Blue Flame Blaster 35 Watt ducted fan would be for free flight or small R/C, while the the Red Flame Blaster 50 Watt ducted fan would be for small R/C. Small R/C systems such as the Canon Micro Elite, the FMA Tetra receiver and the WES-Technik servos are ideal for this size airplane. Scale fans will enjoy the SAAB 29 "Tunnan" in the March '97 issue of Flying Models.
